Temples and Initiations

Magic and Divining

Most people associate Restoration temples with Kirtland and Nauvoo, but the first temple site was located in Palmyra and preceded the church. Every temple had its endowment that took as its model Joseph's initiation as a seer.

The Smith family practiced the Faculty of Abrac, and the Smiths searched for lost treasures. Joseph Smith and many of his peers used divining rods and seer stones both to find lost objects and buried treasures, and also to see hidden secrets.

Visions and Relics

The Restoration began with the visions and dreams of Joseph Smith and his family. It also began with the visions and revelations of other seers and prophets of the day. It took on substance through deeds and recovered relics such as the Gold Plates, the Liahona, the Sword of Laban, and the Interpreters.
